It is obvious Vain devoted the same attention to the textual part of the songs as he did to the musical one. The lyrics often represent 'the exact emotional opposite of the music', as stated in his diary. According to Vain, lyrics and music should never endorse the same sentiment. He considered this kind of 'one way parallel thinking' as 'boring and predictable'.
His diary is also an endless supply of ingenious cynical remarks, addressed to contemporary musicians. 'Careful not to overload people by making them listen and think at the same time,' is one of our favourites.
